Twitter – Your Credibility on Social Media Sites

by Gary ~ May 9th, 2009

Sit down my friend and get comfortable coz this will either delight or disgust you – depending of course on whether you have a positive outlook on life and want to make friends OR you have a negative outlook on life and want to ATTACK people over trivial matters. After you read this you will probably feel inspired to add a comment of your own.

I want to talk today about interacting with other people on social media websites. Principally I want to talk about the latest phenomenon, Twitter.

For the uninitiated, Twitter is an interactive site where people from all over the world can comment back and forth with each other 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. But the comments, known as “Tweets,” are only allowed to be up 140 characters in length. So, you have to be concise.

SO MANY WONDERFUL PEOPLE ON TWITTER:

I want to go on record as saying that I have met some of the most WONDERFUL people on Twitter. These people come from all over the world. They all have several things in common. They are positive, outgoing, happy, progressive, endearing and they want to make a difference in the lives of others.

Let me name a few of these people by using their Twitter ID’s. I’m sure they won’t mind. In no particular order other than those who I have Tweeted with most recently…

http://twitter.com/Candan76
http://twitter.com/GarryParkes
http://twitter.com/Stephen_Bray
http://twitter.com/woofette30
http://twitter.com/thomswartwood
http://twitter.com/JoanneRK
http://twitter.com/RobinGrantham
http://twitter.com/EdEntrepreneur
http://twitter.com/CaroleCross
http://twitter.com/PaulaBrett
http://twitter.com/ChristineRabel
http://twitter.com/HeARTwork
http://twitter.com/AlariaSun
http://twitter.com/LeeAnnHolmberg
http://twitter.com/minxywitch
http://twitter.com/Nadia_Mercelis
http://twitter.com/LexGable
http://twitter.com/juliebmack
http://twitter.com/DanBriffa
http://twitter.com/KellMorgan

And there are MANY others too. I just haven’t interacted with them in the last couple of days and I can’t possibly name everybody or the list would extend to a ridiculous length.

AND THEN THERE ARE ER… “OTHER” PEOPLE ON TWITTER:

But… every now and then along comes some negative, miserable, nasty person who just chooses to say something very mean-spirited for NO GOOD reason at all. Whether it is a mis-interpretation of something that is said, jealously or just being plain evil, these people are out there. PREDATORS!

Now, here’s the interesting thing… and I sent a message out about this just today (copy below). These people are EXPOSING themselves as people completely unworthy of being followed by others.

A PERFECT EXAMPLE OF PURE UNNECESSARY NASTINESS ON TWITTER:

A few weeks ago I was talking to my friend Garry Parkes on the phone and Garry was bewildered that some person on Twitter attacked him in a very nasty way for him (Garry) donating money to a kid’s cancer fund and then repeating (RT’ing) the link with a message for others to do so. I too was astounded that ANYONE would be upset, annoyed, offended or critical towards him for doing such a thing. But Garry gave me the link and I read it for myself. It didn’t take long for me to determine that this particular individual had a very mean-streak about himself. Like a predator, this guy appeared to be actually hunting for people to attack.

IS IT MIS-UNDERSTANDING OR JUST INHERENT NASTINESS?

A week or so later I too came under fire from somebody who completely misunderstood something I said and then decided to take it PERSONALLY – even though the comment was NOT directed at him – and then chose to attack me in a personal, unfair and nasty manner.

What gives with these people? Are they leading such horrendously miserable lives that they just feel the need to upset others. Well, we all know misery loves company. Are they trying to attract other miserable, negative people to form a pity posse?

TWO MORE (PERSONAL) EXAMPLES:

Here are a couple of recent examples (direct copies) of things that have been said to me for NO GOOD reason whatsoever. From the person I just mentioned above (let’s call him “Richard”):

@TheGazzMan Do you even know what 1% of your new 12000 followers do? Big Deal. What are u gonna try to sell me now? Get real Dude.

Huh? I had to read that three or four times coz I just couldn’t believe it and, to be honest, I initially had NO IDEA what he was prattling on about!

So, perplexed at why anyone would send me an unsolicited comment like that, I sent this comment asking him to explain himself:

“Richard, I was wondering why you had to be so rude in the way that you said it. Have I offended you in some way?”

And here is his reply:

“@TheGazzMan Im referring to your claim of 12000 new followers in 85 days. It is all smoke and mirrors. And making$ from it. Oh well.”

Apparently this guy was shitty with me for using the TweetCounter service to send this pre-worded message:

“@Thegazzman gained 12,271 followers in 85 days and 354 since yesterday: http://twittercounter.com/ from TwitterCounter”

Now, here’s the kicker. I wonder if Richard can POSSIBLY see that his barbed comment to me is EQUALLY true of him, albeit at a much lower level of activity as he has FAR less followers than me! Further, he says in his bio: “Im a professional salesman.” Hmm. Really? Does he PRESENT himself as professional? He also claims, “I help business owners increase sales thru enhanced Internet Marketing, Intensive Social Media Marketing… blah, blah, blah.” He’s not a great working example of his claims, is he?

Unfortunately, TweetCounter seems to bring out an element of nastiness and jealousy in some people. Here is another particularly nasty response sent to me – again for NO GOOD reason:

“@TheGazzman Countmysorryass.com says that you have lost 4567 Tweets because you are a conceited jerk.”

Nice huh? Thanks “Mary.” having a NICE life, are you? She called me a “conceited jerk.” How utterly stupid. She doesn’t even KNOW me! How can anyone possibly glean such a vision into my nature from a pre-written Tweet delivered automatically from TweetCounter?

For a start, what this person said was complete rubbish. A lie! “Countmysorryass.com” does not even exist. And as for 4567 Tweets! – total fabricated rubbish just to try to convince people that she knew something negative about me that they were unaware of. Can you see the venom behind such rubbish? How puerile.

I asked Mary why she chose to say this to me and here is her equally ridiculous response:

“@TheGazzMan Anybody that has a special program to announce the number of their followers has issues. IMHO.”

WTF? So what? Yes, her opinion IS indeed humble. So humble, in fact, that it is patently pathetic.

Now, what I do when I come across this sort of thing (not too often – thank God!) is look at the person’s “general” comments to others rather than just ONE mis-guided, mis-informed, idiotic comment in isolation. Here is an example of one of “Mary’s” other comments to people (not me by the way):

“[identity of recipient removed] When your future employer looks you up on Twitter and finds you are a drunken bigot she’ll say next!!!!!!”

Nasty huh? And it shows the disposition of a very mean-spirited individual. Mary has a pattern of being nasty. I blocked her on Twitter by the way. I don’t see any point in discussing anything with a person like this. Unfortunately, Mary is lost in a sea of nasty negativity towards others.

WHY DO THEY CHOOSE TO BEHAVE LIKE THIS?

I am at a loss to understand why these people feel the need to ATTACK people like this. But I think my friend Thom Swartwood hit the nail on the head when he said, simply, “JEALOUSY.” I agree.

LET’S LOOK AT THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THIS FOR A MOMENT:

… The followers that these people had at the time of their nasty comments were 1641 for Richard and 187 for Mary. At the time I had over 12,000. I now have over 13,000. Both of these individuals are STILL struggling for followers and have similar numbers as they did when they sent their comments. What does this tell you?

It tells me that they are shooting themselves in the foot. They are EXPOSING themselves in the worst possible way – announcing to everyone that they are NOT WORTHY of following! Why are they even ON Twitter?

Here’s a Re-Tweet from Garry Parkes of something that I sent out today to try to “educate” these mean-spirited people (this is the comment that I mentioned above):

“GarryParkesRT @TheGazzMan Just remember, those who attack others on Twitter are showing MORE about themselves than those who they are attacking.”

I think that pretty much sums it up.

HAVE YOU COME UNDER ATTACK BY MIS-GUIDED PEOPLE?

Have you been subjected to an unwarranted attack by somebody on a social networking site like Twitter? I invite your comments below. You can give examples of people who EXPOSE their nastiness for all the world to see if you wish. Just don’t identify them in a manner that enables others to find them, please. First names are OK, like I have used above.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

When somebody feels the need to make some totally unwarranted, off-the-planet, evil or nasty remark to you then you can send them here just to show them what they are REALLY doing to their own credibility when they engage in this trash.

PRAISING THOSE WHO ARE GIVING AND ADDING VALUE ON TWITTER:

Alternatively, if you want to PRAISE somebody on Twitter then you can do that here too. I am sure that those people would appreciate you saying such a thing so, by all means, include their Twitter ID if you want.

Let’s praise the wonderful people on Twitter and “TRY” to educate the others. They probably wont “get it” but we can try! The ATTACK DOGS are certainly out there. It’s best not to “engage” them in jousting. That is what they want. Deny them their perverted pleasure. If you ignore them then hopefully they will crawl back under their rock to sulk and leave you alone.

IF YOU WANT TO DIRECT PEOPLE TO THIS BLOG POST:

Finally, if you would like people to come to this blog post then you can copy this tinyurl link (shortened from 92 characters to just 25 characters) – http://tinyurl.com/pd9uh2 and construct your own (positive) comment, OR…

… If you like, you may wish just to copy the following comment and link and send it to somebody who you believe has attacked you unfairly (and hopefully make them see some sense!):

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ COPY & PASTE ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Because of your comment, perhaps you need to read this: http://tinyurl.com/pd9uh2

The Media is Nothing More Than a Bad News Whore!

by Gary ~ April 28th, 2009

Once upon a time the media was considered a “friend” that would inform and educate us about what was going on in the world. It used to consist of a balance between good and bad news. But not any more!

Now the media is completely obsessed with scaring and frightening and warning us, mostly about things that are NOWHERE near as bad as what it portrays or are NEVER going to happen anyway.

Remember the Y2K bug that was going to spell the end of the use of computers on this planet? What about bird flu? What about this latest FEAR it is spreading on swine flu?

In its absolutely DESPERATE and mad scramble for ratings against all other rivals, almost every media outlet – principally the electronic media of television and radio, but also newspapers – is sensationalising the so-called economic disaster-meltdown-crash-whatever and ramming it right down everybody’s throat at every available opportunity. I swear, if I hear that jingoistic claptrap “these harsh economic times” one more time – which I invariably will some time today, then I will switch off that media outlet for a week!

In my opinion, the media is DRIVING the economic collapse. Now why do I say that? Well, put simply, if you tell enough people often enough that things are REALLY, REALLY bad, then guess what? Things become REALLY, REALLY bad! A perception is created and the prophesy becomes fulfilling.

I have reached the stage now where I watch only the first three items of “news” on TV of an evening. If three out of three are bad news, negative news or endless warnings about bird-flu, terrorism, swine-flu, the MELTING global economy, disasters of flood, famine, drought or the usual raft of plane crashes, train smashes or road crashes, then I just switch off.

Like so many other people I am shunning this sort of news. Who bloody needs it? I certainly DON’T!

If they could only understand it, the idiot editors of these forms of media are really destroying their own livelihoods by endlessly feeding us this NEGATIVE end-of-the-world tripe that they just won’t let up about.

Apart from all the above my least favourite so-called “news” item is when an elderly person gets bashed (a fairly regular occurence in the lawless city of Perth, Western Australia in which I live) or an innocent person minding their own business is “glassed” or beset upon by a gang of thugs and we have to be confronted by gory pictures of broken faces with eyes blackened, noses broken, heads gashed and stitched back together – all done at the hands of some mindless moron whose pea-brain has been addled by drugs.

Then, of course, the news media absolutely LOVES and gets right into the faces of those people who are weeping openly at the loss of a loved one or a home burnt down or destroyed in some other way. The news cameras just LOVE to zoom in on this and get right in these people’s faces to portray REAL human grief. For Christ-sake give these people some PRIVACY in their periods of grief!

The media has become a WHORE!

So many people are now switching this media RUBBISH off. And why wouldn’t you? It is too predictable, forced on to us far too often and it is way too graphic. Negative, negative and more NEGATIVE!

Nobody needs a dose of this every hour, on the hour, or splattered all over the first 10 pages of the newspaper. Why are we being subjected to it? And why is it being ramped up the way that it is? Do we need to be held in a state of perpetual fear? No wonder so many people are suffering DEPRESSION! What is the point?

Warning – media! You are flirting with your own inevitable deaths.

Enter the internet, where YOU can decide what YOU want to watch or read or listen to. If it’s too bad then at the click of a mouse you can go somewhere else – places like websites or social media sites like Twitter.

Zap – teleportation to a better place! Yes, I KNOW that you can switch off a TV or radio but…

… you must realise that we have all been “conditioned” to watch and listen to these things without discernment. We just watch and we listen. And in comes the NEGATIVE – like a steam-roller to squash you into submission.

There is no way in the world that I am going to put up with the utter garbage that these traditional news media outlets are foisting upon us all. NO WAY! Like so many others I’m tuning O-U-T!

Being subjected with endless negativism all the time does nothing to help anyone. I figure that if things get THAT bad, somebody is going to tell me anyway, so why should I take any notice of any of it and ruin my day? All it will do is harm my mind. I don’t need that and neither do YOU!

You can fight back against these media whores who will offer up any sensationalistic GARBAGE just to get headlines. MOST of what they say and write is utter dribble anyway. Switch off, filter, tune out. You don’t need the negativity, the scare-mongering, the fear, the trauma, the drama – it’s all so unneccesary and damaging to your mind. Your life will be so much better without it all.

Dump it. You don’t need it. These days, unfortunately, the media is nothing more than a bad news whore!

Do you agree with me or disagree? Tell me what you think. Don’t hold back – let it rip!

Branding – Internet Marketing – Lessons From the WWE

by Gary ~ April 14th, 2009

One of the best things that you can do in your Internet Marketing activities is to establish a presence that makes you and your material instantly identifiable. I’m talking, of course, about BRANDING or creating a “style.”

To have an instantly recognisable persona or logo or style will set you apart from the millions and millions of other wannabes out there.

You will notice that I have, over a period of time now, been using two “brands,” so to speak. I refer, of course, to “TheGazzMan” on Twitter and my blog here which I have branded as the “Temple.” You may think this is corny or ostentatious of me. I don’t care. Branding works. When people hear of the “Temple” they know what it is. And when they hear my alter-ego name they know who I am too. Or soon will.

I refer also to Nikki Stephens who has established herself as the “Purple Minxy Witch” residing at her “Lair of Temptation.” Yeah, it’s outrageous and funny and clever, all rolled into one. And that is what branding is all about. Go and have a look at www.nikkistephens.com as Nikki rolls out her new look blog – purple, of course.

Moving right along…

Love it or hate it, one of the most brilliant examples (IMHO) of endless branding of “personalities” and events can be seen by watching the WWE – the World Wrestling Entertainment.

In a world full of endless negativity the WWE provides entertainment to millions of people who are desperate for an escape from the constant threats and warnings and danger messages being sent out by so-called “TV news” stations, radio stations and newspapers. They are all feeding the masses with what I call – well there are no other words for it – endless negative CRAP! And I will have a LOT more to say about this very soon. So, watch out for it.

So… BRANDING… what can we learn from the WWE? In my opinion – PLENTY!

Let’s look at the facts:

1 – Every WWE event is sold out.
2 – The WWE is watched by millions of people on pay per view TV
3 – WWE wrestlers and personalities are unbelievably popular
4 – WWE merchandising is a multi-million dollar industry

Why?

Well, it’s deceptively simple – personalities and story lines. Entertainment. So, let me ask you this… in your Internet Marketing are YOU entertaining? Coz if you are BORING then you will be like every other dead leaf falling from the tree.

In the WWE, the personalities are bizarre and the story lines are even more bizarre. But it WORKS. People EAT it up. The happenings at the WWE are outrageously rememberable.

Let me provide some well-known examples (and favourite “characters” of mine):

Hulk Hogan – the “Hulkster” as he is known is probably the most loved and iconic figure in the WWE of all time. He is a massive man with long blonde straggly hair and a matching zapata style moustache, wearing bright yellow wrestling tights and boots to match. He most often wears a red t-shirt that he rips off and throws into the crowd prior to his “matches,” sending members of the audience scrambling to retrieve it.

In his day, Hulk Hogan drove the crowds wild by taking on the biggest, baddest foes and getting “beaten up” by the likes of 7’2″ Andre the Giant, 7’0″ Big John Studd and the 500lb 6’4″ bald-headed, baby-faced, King Kong Bundy. All of those names mentioned all had their own personas and were known as “heels” – that is, wrestlers who were “bad” and who the crowds loved to HATE. (so there was passion!).

Each of these wrestlers also had their so-called “signature” finishing moves too. Hulk Hogan used to have the “leg drop” where he would jump in the air and come crashing down on his opponent with the back of his leg. This, of course, was after taking a terrible beating. Then he would just rise up, shaking his entire body, apparently impervious to pain, Then it was his turn to do the beating up which would almost always finish up with him winning by using his TRADEMARK move of the leg drop.

Hulk Hogan, via the WWE’s marketing arm, would sell everything from bandanas bearing another trademark term “Hulkamaniac” to plastic figurines to watches to towels and even mugs and cups – anything and everything, in fact.

The “Rock” – Perhaps the most outrageous “trash-talker” that the WWE has ever had. His “interviews” were full of ridiculous comments, banter, rhymes, sayings and quotes. He would often throw his head back and cry out: “If ya smell what the Rock… is cookin’!” with his tongue waggling all the way through it. I have to say, that used to make me laugh every time coz it was so utterly ridiculous. And the crowds would be sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for him to do it too. They LOVED it.

The Rock also had other equally recognisable crazy antics like the “raised eyebow”, which he dubbed “The People’s Eyebrow” and endless talking about his genitals which he would refer to as the “strudel” or the “Rock’s package.” After drawing attention to that area he would then admonish the interviewers and camera people for looking at it. It was so ridiculously funny. The Rock – Dwayne Johnson – was by far the funniest wrestler of all time and he has since gone on to star in many Hollywood movies.

The Rock’s TRADEMARK finishing move was “The People’s Elbow” where he would poleaxe his opponent in the centre of the ring, use his feet to shove the hapless opponent’s arms together, remove his elbow bands and throw them into the crowd and then commence a ritual of moves that saw him race from one side of the ring to the other jumping over the opponent up to four or five times. Then he would fire his arms and legs out in all sorts of vertical break-dancing moves like he was having an epileptic fit and finally drop the elbow on the opponent. This eventually happened after this massive amount of showmanship – which the crowd always went absolutely crazy over.

Triple H – Hunter Hearst Helmsley – One of the greatest “champions” of the modern era of professional wrestling. Also known as “The Game” with even a song written for him along with dramatic music and a light show that he would enter the stadium to. It would only take a few bars of the song to be played for most of the 1000’s of people in the stadium to rise to their feet as one.

Triple H wore his HHH brand on the backside of his wrestling tights. After strolling into the stadium and “threatening” various members of the audience he would jump up onto the apron of the ring, turn to face the screaming fans, douse his hair with water from a plastic bottle, gulp some and then spray it out in a mist at the cameras.

Triple H almost always wins every match against all comers. He manages this by using his own signature move – the “Pedigree” where he traps his opponent’s head between his knees, lifts their shoulders and then drops his knees and his opponent’s head into the canvas, supposedly knocking his opponent senseless for the pin.

There are many more examples of “branded” wrestlers, their managers and other support staff who use instantly recognisable personas, music, outfits and signature moves to TRADEMARK themselves.

Love it or hate it the World Wrestling Entertainment industry has been exciting crowds like nothing else for over 25 years now – ever since its first “Wrestlemania” event. Wrestlemania XXV has just been and this entertainment phenomena just keeps getting stronger and stronger.

Now I make no comment nor do I want any about the allegations and proof of drug taking and all the deaths of these wrestlers over the years. My commentary here is all about BRANDING and TRADEMARKING of individuals.

I invite your comments and I would be very pleased if you would pick a wrestler that has annoyed, amused, delighted or disgusted you and tell us a little bit about why that is so. You can describe outfits, traits, signature moves, outrageous sayings… whatever. But let’s keep the comments to the purpose of this post please – BRANDING.

Book Review – “The Richest Man in Babylon” by George S Clason

by Gary ~ April 1st, 2009

Hello again,

I did mention to Hilary Dickinson during the week that I would have something special to write about in my book review this week. You see, I know that Hilary is very passionate about teaching children literary and numeracy and financial skills because we ALL KNOW that the so-called “education system” in our respective countries is failing to educate our children to any accpetable standard at all these days.

Parents like Hilary should be commended for taking this stance and I hope that everyone visits Hilary’s blog to add their comments on what she is doing. And well done to her daughter (Lizzie “the Lizzard”) too for being so keen to learn from her mum. If only all kids would do the same. But… most of them seem destined to make the SAME nincompoop mistakes that their parents have taken half a lifetime to learn from and correct…

… anyway, where was I? Oh yeah! Book review. Sometimes I just get so side-tracked.

Well, I am sitting here with my copy of “The Richest Man in Babylon” written by George S Clason and wondering what I can possibly say about this WONDERFUL book to inspire you to go and purchase a copy and READ it. No, not just read it – STUDY it!

You see, like my previous book review on “Psycho Cybernetics” (Maxwell Maltz) – which you can read at: http://motivationselfesteem.com/talk/914/book-review-psycho-cybernetics-by-maxwell-maltz.htm – if you missed it, “The Richest Man in Babylon” is another of my TOP TEN motivation, inspiration and information books of all time. Yes! It is that darn good.

In my massive library of 300-400 motivation, self-esteem, inspiration books this little baby is right up there. So, what is it all about?

Perhaps I could do no better than to repeat the “mandamus”-like inscription just inside the front cover:

“Lo, money is plentiful for those who understand the simple rules of its acquisition.”

1 – start thy purse to fattening
2 – control thy expenditures
3 – make thy gold multiply
4 – guard thy treasures from loss
5 – make of thy dwelling a profitable investment
6 – insure a future income
7 – increase thy ability to earn.

Now, that all sounds VERY simple doesn’t it? So, why do most people completely stuff it up? Hmm, well we live in a very complex world now. People with VESTED interests make SIMPLE finance VERY difficult to understand. I am talking about bankers, stock-brokers, insurers, finance providers and the like. Oh, not to mention how all of those “industries” are now completely surrounded by massive legal teams completely devoted to enshrouding simple techniques with legal “protection” thereby making everything very, very complex and almost IMPOSSIBLE to understand.

The Richest Man in Babylon (sorry Nikki Stephens but yep, Babylon IS in the title and I know that “By the Rivers of Babylon” is not your favourite tune of all time and that this will further ensure that the words of that song will be bouncing around inside your head – SORRY!), as the name suggests (and the excerpt above) is written in biblical text.

DON’T LET THAT PUT YOU OFF!

George Classon wrote a MASTERPIECE here! Just a few comments about Classon…

George Classon was born in Louisiana Missouri on 7 November 1874. He was a publisher and in 1926 he issued the first of a series of pamphlets on thrift and financial success. These pamphlets were issued by banks and insurance companies in tens of thousands. People loved the information and from these pamphlets the Richest Man in Babylon was conceived. It went on to sell many millions of copies.

Using much of this information and adding a few twists of my own I wrote “How to Save 1000’s and Increase Your Personal Net Wealth” which you can see here: http://motivationselfesteem.com/wealth.html. The main addition to my book was the inclusion of a set of exercises to “slap” people into action by making them realise that:

1 – you probably are NOT doing anywhere near as well as you think you are and,
2 – you need to do something about that NOW!

Anyway, back to the Richest Man in Babylon by George Classon – get it, read it, study it and apply the timeless principles. The ISBN is 0:7343:0509:5 and my copy is published by Penguin books.

PS: Oh, one more thing… in 2002, I purchased a copy for each of my children… as a Christmas present. Can you imagine their faces when they opened those presents? Then me being me offered them a $50 note for a one page book review by way of a “promissory note.”

I warned them not to “fudge” me on that review either coz I would know (and I bloody-well would have too and they KNEW it!). I am pleased to inform that they both collected the $50 and both have made some very sound financial decisions ever since. They are both now at least $100,000 in front of where they would have been had they not absorbed the wisdom of this book.
