Gary’s HINTS & TIPS #4 – Setting Up a Blogroll in Wordpress
SORRY FOLKS BUT I CAN’T ALLOW COMMENTS HERE
I can’t allow comments here because I want this place to be an organised, brief (yeah, sure!) collection of hints and tips for students of Alex Jeffreys. I recognise that many of you have incredible talents – talents that I do not have. But I’m sure that I have knowledge that I can offer too. We all can.
I may add to this list of topics AND within the topics over time to help you all – so CHECK BACK regularly. (Please refer others here if you wish.
THIS TOPIC – HOW TO SET UP YOUR BLOGROLL IN WORDPRESS:
First, can I STRONGLY suggest that you print out these instructions from yours truly so that you can follow them off a bit of paper as you go. Flicking back and forth between screens gets people lost (me included – LOL!)
1 – Go to your Wordpress Dashboard,
2 – Click the tab marked MANAGE,
3 – Click the sub-tab marked LINKS,
4 – Go to ADD NEW LINKS and click it. This will bring up a new panel with three oblong boxes into which you key your details
… 1st box – type in the person’s name.
… 2nd box – type in the person’s URL (ie website address – make sure you get it EXACT – check it)
… 3rd box – type in description saying something like “Alex Jeffreys Students” or whatever you want. This is what will show if anybody “scrolls” their cursor over the name in your blogroll, so don’t write “doofus” or something rude or you will be in trouble.
5 - Scroll down to “categories.” Set it to blogroll (ie tick it with your cursor). This is where all your blogroll links will gather.
6 - Scroll down to “advanced options.” I always select “blank” for the target. If you do this then what it means is when a visitor to your site clicks the link it will open in a new window and your site will remain open.
7 – Scroll back to “SAVE” and click it.
Hey Presto! You’re done. Just do this process for EVERY person that you want to put on your blogroll.
Your blogroll will now appear on your live page. Don’t forget to refresh your page to see new entries.
IMPORTANT: Test every new link to make sure it works. Lazy people don’t do this and end up with a bunch of dead links. If any link doesn’t work go back and edit the URL field as this is a sure sign that you have made a mistake.
Best Wishes
Gary Simpson
