Zen Garden > Plan For the Future But Live In the PresentWho knows what lies ahead? In just one second the life of any person living on this planet can be terminated. Sobering thought, isn't it? But it's true.In just one second the life of any person living on this planet can be terminated. Sobering thought, isn't it? But it's true. The older that most of us get the more precious we understand life to be - not only our own lives but the life of all living things. If you are lucky enough and careful enough you will live somewhere between 75 to 80 years if you are a man and between 80 and 85 years if you are a woman. Taking into account the fact that the human body degenerates every year past your late teens and early twenties, then it is no surprise that the older you get the more decrepit your body becomes and the less you can physically do. Added to this is the threat of physical or mental disease and the situation gets just a little more grim for every year that you live. Although planning for the future is a very prudent thing to do we must also give due regard for living in the moment. You should take time every day to appreciate all the wonderful things around you - the sky, the ocean, the smell of the first rain, the way an ant goes about its business, the work of the bees, nature and above all else your relationship with all other people. For without relationships we are indeed lonely souls. Cultivate an awareness that you will appreciate very day for what it is. Try to learn something new every day. Try to compliment somebody sincerely every day for something that you believe they have done well. The world is indeed a wondrous place and you are a part of it. Make your limited time here count. Plan for the future but live in the present.
