Zen Garden > Book Review - Echo Park by Michael ConnellyBefore I even start my review I am going to own up to something...
... I absolutely adore the writing of Michael Connelly. There, I said it. Adore is probably an effeminate word for somebody like me to use but, honestly, I cannot think of any word that is more appropriate.
... I absolutely adore the writing of Michael Connelly. There, I said it. Adore is probably an effeminate word for somebody like me to use but, honestly, I cannot think of any word that is more appropriate. In particular, I really enjoy Connelly's principal character Hieronymous Bosch, or as he is more affectionately known, Harry Bosch. Bosch, the illegitimate son of a prostitute (as was revealed in previous novels), is a tough Los Angeles Police Department Detective who works homicide cases with a cast of other bit-part characters that drift in and out of the stories. In Echo Park, Bosch is on the trail of a serial killer. A suspect, who Bosch investigated and was forced to pass over some thirteen years previously, is still at the forefront of his mind. Since that time another nine victims have been slain. The slaying of the first victim, Marie Gesto, has haunted Bosch and he is determined this time round to see her killer behind bars. What bothers Bosch more than anything else, now that the case has been re-opened, is that he suspects that he and his partner at the time may have overlooked a vital clue that could have captured Gesto's killer. A nasty piece of work called Raynard Waits has been captured and he is willing to confess to several murders, including Gesto's, in exchange for not being given a death sentence. There is something interesting about this serial killer's name but I won't reveal what that is here. You'll have to discover this for yourself - as Bosch himself does when unraveling what really happened and who is responsible for each of the murders. As I have come to expect from Michael Connelly this is yet another wonderfully crafted novel full of intrigue, suspense and drama. My score for Echo Park is 8.5 out of 10 which is particularly high because I struggle to rate most novels that I read past a score of 6. Echo Park is a superb read. It is entertainment plus from the opening sentence to the very last word.
