Zen Garden > Putting the Lunacy of Terrorism Into Perspective

We are presented with a daily dose of all this terrible terrorism news every day, often every half-hour if we listen to the radio. How do we put it into perspective?

Terrorism. Bombs. Death. Mutilation. Gore. Destruction. These are the words and images at the forefront of every newspaper, television and radio bulletin. Sickening, isn't it?

We are presented with a daily dose of all this terrible news every day, often every half-hour. If you wake up to an alarm clock set to a commercial radio station then half an hour is all it takes before you hear about the latest murder and maiming caused by suicide bombers. What a way to start your day.

Our political leaders are also doing their very best to keep this present scourge uppermost in our minds. They do this, of course, because they know that it is far easier to manipulate and rule over people who are in a constant state of worry and fear.

So, the questions are:

  • do you participate in all this negativity?
  • do you live in a state of perpetual fear?
  • do you retreat to your bunker?
  • The terror is not going to go away. If anything it will become more common and more severe as each terror cell attempts to create even worse atrocities. They are the things that we can be certain of.

The sad reality is that we are going to have to put up with the actions of these murderous lunatics for quite some time into the future. They could strike anybody, anywhere and at any time. Sneaking around and letting off bombs in public places to kill and maim indiscriminantly innocent men, women and children of any ethnicity is their modus operandi.

For the average person who struggles to come to grips with all this, I believe the best way to protect yourself is to develop a healthy awareness of your surroundings and any suspicious people and report anything that does not seem right. Usually, when something seems amiss, it is. Learn to trust your "inner voice."

There is so much good in the world - so much to marvel at. But all that is good is being overshadowed by the actions of those who hate everything and everyone. Don't let the cockroaches of this world prevent you from enjoying your life. Get on with the things that matter to you. Appreciate the company of your friends and loved ones. Celebrate all that is good. Make the most of your life.

I will leave you with these words from William Allen White:

"I am not afraid of tomorrow, for I have seen yesterday and I love today."
