Bagsy I get in here first!

I’m a strange one in this regard (oh, like that’s news).

While I do think an accountability partner is a good thing, they need to be the *right* person. Maybe it’s just me, but I get resentful when people try to interfere in what I’m doing, even if their intentions are good.

I found this at school (yes, even I can remember that far back). I had a group of friends that were intelligent and so being around them made me perform a lot better as we all worked together as a team and therefore elevated each other. Comes back to the old TEAM = Together Everyone Achieves More.

However, there are those people that I just cannot work around. People that allow me to *not* focus (oh, ok, as if I need permission from anyone) – it’s entirely my own fault. I’m rambling, I need more tea.

Right – some attempt at coherence.

Those of you that read my somewhat lengthy post over at Hilary’s blog will know that I have had some interesting experiences where family values are concerned – while I’m not going into depth here, there was an obvious detrimental effect on me when the structure of my family changed.

So. I think the idea of an accountability partner is a very good one, but the matching of the minds is absolutely crucial. If I don’t feel supported and instead just feel nagged or like I’m being poked with a stick, then I’ll be out of there as fast as my broomstick will take me.

But then likewise I would need someone that knows how to encourage me, and that I can also influence. The whole point is that it should be a 2-way thing, so not just one person keeping an eye on the other – it needs to be equal. So there needs to be someone out there that will listen to what I have to say and be genuinely open to my ideas as I would be to theirs. Especially if it involves lots of tea drinking.

I know that I need help in this business, and it’s hard for me to ask for it. So there have to be other people in the same situation that would be very grateful for guidance – as long as it’s given in the right kind of way…

There, that wasn’t so bad was it?! Stopped talking complete nonsense by the end…sort of…!

    Nix

  2. Gary

@ Nix – well, I AM a tea-drinker like you. Ugh! I can’t stand that POISON that people guzzle down called “caw-fee.” Can’t stand the taste of it or the smell of it or even the rancid look of it. It’s got me beat how they do it. But… ahh… a lovely cup of tea! Now that is another matter entirely.

Hmm, well, I can be a little pushy at times but you always have your broomstick to bash me with. So, if you want a bit of encouragement then I shall offer my “services.”

So, if I keep an eye on you then you can keep an eye on I.

Do I have to get down on one knee or anything? PMSL!

    Gazz-Man

PS: While I am down on one knee you can always “dub” me with your broom and say “arise Warlock Gary.” After all, you are the Purple Minxy Witch and it is probably within your powers to do such a thing, I guess. Is it? Gee, it’s so late here – like 2.36am – I am probably also talking nonsense. Um, not inferring you were BTW. What you said was pretty funny.

    [...] Internet Marketing – Plan, Action, Accountability | Internet … [...]

  4. Nikki

I’m English, so it’s just ‘cough-ee’ to me.

Did any of my rambling above make any sense whatsoever? I need lots of tea today (er, like that’s different from any other day).

Although, I do very occasionally drink coffee, but only when it’s really milky otherwise I find it too bitter. And I can’t be dealing with sugar in drinks, so I don’t do squash or anything along those lines. Alcoholic beverages are a different matter entirely of course.

Anyway. There was supposed to be a sensible point to my comment. You have willingly offered to step unto the breach and assist me – and my god you have no idea how much work that could entail! We’ll be at it for years!

In fact, are you sure you haven’t offered just because you DO want me to beat you with my broomstick on occasion?

I shall accept your most generous offer, and shall stock up on teabags…

Oooh, can we think up a name for our team?

    Nix

  5. Nikki

Stop adding PS parts once I’ve already replied.

So you want to go down the witch / warlock theme…hmm…I shall have to think of a team name!!

  6. Gary

@ Nix – well I was just about to tootle off to Nodland – and yes I was just doing a crafty little edit thingy and adding a PS while you were obviously in there replying yourself. Very funny BTW. I can see who is gonna try to be the boss here. Key word… TRY!

That will be your first mission – to think up a JV name. Oh dear! This could be interesting, to say the least.

Yes, stock up on cyber tea bags. I have about 4 or 5 cups a day. It must be my “English heritage.” Well, part Pom and part bloody convict probably.

    Gazz-Man

  7. Gary

Um Nikki? Nothing. Just wanted to even up the posts.

  8. Nikki

Equals my dear, equals. We both bring different strengths to the table. Or bar. Or wherever.

The whole point about this accountability stuff is that it is a functional and productive partnership, not a boss & employee scenario.

(Ha. The Purple Minxy Witch has spoken)

  13. Gary

    Like tea-drinking?

But wait… you haven’t seen any of my holds?

  14. Nikki

Wrestling implies a power struggle. Have you not been reading my comments above? Don’t tell me this will be our first squabble. PMSL.

  15. Gary

Well, it would only be a power struggle IF you tried to escape. Maybe we could have a nice cuppa while you decided.

    I like playing Squabble too. See? That’s how I win. S=1, Q=10 (always try to whang that down on a triple letter score), U=1, A=1, B=3 (I think) L = 2 (I think) and E =1.

  16. Nikki

I have never played Scrabble, so perhaps that will have to be one of our first educational meetings.

Tea however is a fundamental part of this team building.

  17. Nigel Yip

    Hi Gary

Again, excellent blog post topic. Re: Your Planning, action and an accountability partner to push you FORWARD in your Internet Marketing efforts? question.

Well planning, is a foremost MUST for anyone. I don’t want to brag about anything but I’ve been dabbling into eBay since 2001 when I first teamed up with my dad and started to sell his accumulated junk. And back in them days, we never had a plan as it was only a hobby.

I then ventured into eBay full time whilst pursuing my education and in 2006, I had a plan back then and was pretty much on target and very happy with my annual income, then I lost it completely.

College was the main reason, I lost focused on keeping to my plan, had firends who were obsessed with women didn’t exactly help, asked 2 girls out and got rejected, and I simply was not focused anymore, which meant I took less action. No plan, no action and pretty much well lost!

Since then I’ve been retrying to build things back, but with university and me dabbling into the Home Biz Opps Magazine direct mail order venture, as well as trying to build my ebay biz back up, whilst also looking and investing into IM Products, I ended up even more lost and losing focus etc..

So yes planning is essential and taking action is equally vitally important – well to me anyway.

Which brings me on to now, on accountability. Accountability is great if you find someone right i.e. like I did with my friend at university. We accounted each other and challenged each other who could get the best module marks. We both ended up with a set of good grades and it certainly helped us through our design tech engineering course which is awfully run. So it was great to have someone to speak to, keep one on course and yes it does work.

The unfortunate thing for me as I don’t like to be tied down anymore now so will it work for me in IM? I don’t know, still tomorrow is a major milestone for me.

Speak soon and have a great day – sorry about my ranter and boring story – best get back to making my cake that I’ve planned all morning.

    Best Regards
    Nigel

Accountability? Hmm I think that we all need it, but as both Nikki and Nigel say an accountability partner needs to be the right person.

Sometimes it can be quite straightforward to find someone that you get on really well with and your ideas run along the same lines. At other times it can lead to disappointment either with yourself or your partner. But the idea is a great one if we can make it work for us.

I have been really struggling over the last couple of weeks to really keep going with writing on my blog and commenting on others. Much of it has been due to trying to catch up with work I put on hold whilst the coaching course was on, but also an increase in my teaching hours and sheer tiredness!

I have also been doing lots of research for my ebook and niche. Thank you so much Nikki for your rant on my blog it has had quite an influence on me, you and I suspect many other people.

I have been talking to some of my students about what I have been reading and researching and I have had a mixed response, but with the introduction of the new diplomas for 14-19 year olds, there is the possibility of being able to introduce financial topics into ‘citizenship’ or similar classes.

This really excites me and if there is someone out there who wants to help keep me focussed on this then please let me know.

I know this is quite a different niche to the ones that many other people are following, but it is one that uses my experiences and abilities as well as firing my imagination and hopefully being of use to me and my family. Lizzie and I have just received the third elesson on the Cash-Smart Kids course we are following at the moment, so will be doing that in the next few days. (Check out the link on my blog if you are interested)

In the end unless we have the interest in something, we are going to find it really difficult to keep going with it. Just because other people say that they are making lots of money with product X doesn’t mean that it will be enough to keep us working through difficult times.

So back to the bit I have been trying to wriggle out of (sorry!). Planning.

Erm – I know the importance of this and I know that I should get it all written down and reviewed, but I have to admit that I am not as good with it as I know that I should be. So if someone really wants to give me the proverbial kick up the backside with this one I’d be grateful!

I will get there at my own speed with all the distractions and requirements of a being a mum, wife, teacher, my own person etc (I have another trip next week to the Midlands to sort out my aunt’s house ready for the buyer).

And if anyone thinks that I could help them in any way, then I would be delighted to do so. I’ve often been told that I am a good encourager so do let me know if you want me to encourage you!

Oh dear another long comment – I’d better go and write this amount as my next post, I think!

    Hilary

  19. Sandra Rodrigues

    Ok,

There is NO time to waist on this one and the only way I had of communicating with all of you was to go to each blog and post this message.

First of all, it feels great to be back. If you are one of the lovely people that was following my live soap opera on my baby’s health you would have known that I had to take time out to look after him. Thanks a lot for all the messages in support of that hard time, honestly.

He is doing great now, so I am back full time, desperately trying to recoup all the time I couldn’t dedicate myself to my business. But I need to confess I’ve grown a lot over the past few weeks. Won’t bore you here, check my blog if you want more details. Actually I’ve put some very good resources on a new page called ‘My slightly ‘mental’ exercises’.

Anyway this is about Rich Scheffren and Jay Abraham. Wow, not much introduction needed here, is there?

As you would know I also did the GPS coaching program with Rich at Strategic Profits along with Alex. Jay Abraham is one of Rich’s main mentors for good reason.

    **************************************************************
I do beg you to check this link https://schefren.infusionsoft.com/go/MORIcall/srodrigu/.

Yes it is my affiliate link, yes I will make money some how (not quite sure as yet because this is a link to an ENTIRELY FREE 2 HOURS COACHING WITH JAY HIM SELF) Oh My Dear Brazilian Lord..

    ***************************************************************
Because I am an Strategic Profits’ client, I’ve got my place guaranteed, so that is that. I checked the link and I’ve saved myself a place for one of the calls, there will be 3.

Then I’ve got this email from Brian (COO for Rich) giving me this link to pass it to my list and what do you know? I don’t have one, but I know you guys will benefit SOOO much from this call and is free.

The only one catch is that this is massively urgent. I’ve got the email before their affiliates will start sending it to their own lists. There will be only 3000 phone lines available. Can you imagine how many thousands of people will be teased about this call and will actually act faster than the speed of light?

So please stop whatever you might be doing, click on the link and save yourself a place. It’s free, but as Jay says himself on the form, take seriously, don’t sign up if you are not going to show up, you will actually be taking the place of someone that might really be needing and waisting someone’s right to hear this fantastic man teaching.

Take care and lot’s of love

@ Nikki – Oh, I will be able to teach you all sorts of unusual and delightful words. Hmm… I don’t use too many of them here. Maybe I should. I just don’t want to feel like a funambulist. Oh – TEA – yes, if you are coming to Las Vegas you must bring some of your favourite brews and let me sample them and I will do the same. I must introduce you to the Japanese green tea that I mentioned over at “the Lair.” I might even convert you – LOL!

@ Nigel – Thanks for the compliment. OK Nigel – here is your solution to “getting the E-Bay mojo back.” First, you need you to ask yourself, “Do you really WANT to get that E-Bay hunger back?” If the answer is yes then do this. Sit quietly and think about how you felt when you were selling all that E-bay stuff. How did it make you feel? Think about all the emotions involved, the self-worth, the importance, the ecstasy of knowing you were moving ahead. Can you feel it? Now write it all down.

Try to make it at least half a page, preferably a page. Be as DESCRIPTIVE as you can. Get ALL the emotions and feelings down on paper. Then read it as often as possible. When you “internalise” these feelings they will become so strong that you will be hunting around for things to sell.

I know that a lot of people make a lot of money selling things on E-Bay. I have an elderly friend who goes to swap-meets and boot sales and buys up all sorts of things really cheap. Then he sells it on E-Bay – often for 40 or 50 times what he paid for it. He is now a Power Seller and makes $1,000′s.

Then, of course, after you are back in the swing of selling, you can teach it. I think you already have an e-book on this, don’t you?

Like the song goes, Nigel, “You’ve lost that lovin’ feelin’.” But only YOU can get it back. I just told you how. But is this what you REALLY want? Only you know.

@ Hilary – Well, you have indicated that you would like an accountability partner, so if anybody else wants one then Hilary is here!

Accountability partners definitely need to get on well. I think Nikki and I do – ie we both drink heaps of tea though I think Nix could be the world champion there and we both like purple and we both like messing around with words, innuendo etc. Plus we have already exchanged many emails on various projects that we are involved in. Er, plus Nix is a witch (lol) and I defo have some “warlockish” qualities/afflictions. PMSL.

Back to you Hils, I think your proposed niche is fantastic. To be able to create teaching modules for kids is a wonderful goal. You can kind of take up where our UTTERLY USELESS education – I was gonna say systems – mess totally fails. My idea would be to teach practical values for young adults that they can use in their life. For example, I can still remember and use complex physics and chemistry equations and formulae but it is for amusement only and to show off at quiz nights. Would I do that? You betcha!

I have never wanted to work out the “gravitational pull of two planets” even though (with a bit of a brush up) I can. I know all the volume formulae for cones, spheres, cylinders etc. Ever used it? NOPE! So, most of what I learned was useless junk.

I mentioned over at the Hils Learning Center for Young Adults that more USEFUL things are learning about compound interest, balancing cheque books and the like but NO! That doesn’t get taught in our education mess, does it?

As I can feel another rant coming on I’m gonna stop. I’ve already done my nut over this several times and I sound like a bloody stuck record (or CD – LOL!).

@ Sandra – Glad to hear that things are looking better on the homefront for you. I don’t know what the problem was but it sounded serious. Hope it is all sorted.

I will try to get across to that Rich Scheffren site but I have my hands completely full ATM. Seems to be situation normal lately. No time. As soon as I clean the slate – MORE incoming missiles!

    Hi Gary

Thank you so much for your excellent advice, I do a feel the eBay hunger, reason being: I have been busily building it back, as well as creating a new dedicated blog for it during the recreation rest month that I took out recently. I’m currently in the process of auto-piloting everything so that I can concentrate back on this IM learning journey and applying what I’ve learnt here to the niches I want to do.

Upon reflecting back, doing eBay was great but I didn’t learn as much or nor did I get to meet and make lots of new wonderful friends like yourself and the fellow student friends in the F500 community.

The month I took out recently, really did make me think about all of this and what I’ve noticed is that: I really can’t leave IM, it’s infectious and I don’t care how long it will take whether it be 1, 2, 3, 5, or even 10 years +, I will crack the IM Code and I will run eBay by the side of it.

I will certainly investigate your idea about the further eBay eBook idea to add to my first one that I had written up last year.

Thanks again for your great advice Gary.
    Nigel

BTW: Gary I hope you didn’t mind, but I recommend Power of Choice to my offline biz ops venture friend Chris who is 60+ years old and when he read it, he said it was AMAZING!

  22. Sandra Rodrigues

I hear you Gary, I am at the overwhelming state yet again. To be honest I am a bit fed up with it (the overwhelming feeling that is).

Maybe that is my cue to get myself organised once and for all. I do bits and pieces and don’t follow up and things get on top of each other in a matter of hours.

I will come back here to read your latests posts it seems like it would be helpful to me right now.

I am not quite sure they will record the call but if you are on the IM game for a while I am sure you do know the value of this man’s knowledge. Rich himself adores Jay Abraham.

Anyway, I know the feeling, take care mate and speak soon,

    Sandra

“Planning should also constitute developing an efficient lead management system, especially lead distribution. Usually, even if businesses already have good leads, they fail to convert them to sales simply because wrong salespeople are working on them. You can basically come up with your own lead routing rules, depending on the nature of your business.”

Hi Nigel – I’m glad that you found my comments helpful. Emotion is the motor that runs us. When we feel deeply emotional about something we are capable of ANYTHING. Just to give a few examples – love, hate, success, revenge, friendship and yes… even murder.

When you become emotionally involved in something you will do whatever it takes. That is why I suggested that technique to you. It’s important to sit and think first and THEN write. If you write while you are thinking there is a tendency to become distracted and write distracting thoughts. Well, that is what I find anyway. I am male, so are you. Males are generally single-minded about things.

I suppose our great MULTI-TASKER will swing in here shortly and say, “Nah! I can do 9 other things while I am doing that.” (Just waiting PMW). But in something as IMPORTANT as this – recapturing a lost feeling – I think this is the BEST way. If you really want that feeling back then you need to focus on it.

Down the track I am gonna feature this a lot more in my “Brain Training” e-book. I have many e-books on lots of different subjects and I will be adding them to the discussions here progressively. So far, readers here have only sampled:

    ~~~ ACTION Planner
    ~~~ Power of Choice.

But I have a LOT of other material to come.

Nigel, I don’t mind at all that you offered my Power of Choice e-book to your friend Chris. I wrote it to be read. His reaction is a fairly “normal” one. Maybe I should take my own advice here and write out my own emotions when I wrote that book… that would be scary. If I could write a sequel or a prequel to that it would be something else.

Just between you and me (and every other set of eyeballs here) when you had your “hiatus” from the Alex Jeffreys Internet Marketing coaching I think you were probably suffering from INFORMATION OVERLOAD. What you did was probably your way of coping with it. I think everybody has felt this and everybody has tried to cope in the best way possible.

But most of those “left standing” are now using the knowledge they have gained to advantage. The others have either slipped quietly off or are looking for the NEXT push-button-make-me-rich scheme – and they will become cannon-fodder to all the Internet Marketers out there. Garry Parkes and I spoke about this last night before the call we had with Linda Caroll and we both agreed.

Just on my friend and colleague Linda Caroll – she has some very exciting information to share with those who want it soon. More on that later.

Hi Sandra – Overwhelmed at being overwhelmed. I know! I have had days where I have thought, “Today is gonna be the day that I finally catch up.” And then, like I said before … INCOMING MISSILES!

Often just ONE email from somebody can take over an hour to deal with. And if those emails are asking for me to do an e-book review or an edit or proof-read then I am thrown all out of whack. I need to start declining those requests soon but I have willingly done them to date coz those asking have been friends from the course. So, this accountability thing will probably be good for me – IF people embrace it. They can then do “idea-bouncing” and proof-reading and editing for their own “accountability partner.”

    I can relate to this:

“I do bits and pieces and don’t follow up and things get on top of each other in a matter of hours.”

I have often been right in the middle of nailing something and then I get distracted by something “URGENT” so I go to do that then something else comes at me. Pretty soon I have three or four things all partially done. I have things on my desk like that RIGHT NOW! It’s very frustrating.

In fact, it annoys me so much that I am gonna devise a system to handle it .

@ Perry – I agree. Efficiency is important. After all, what is the point of getting the lead in the first place? To convert it. A lead is a lead. It shouldn’t be a “virtual” lead.

    Gary

PS: Perry, I tried 4 times to leave a comment at your blog but was denied every time. I used to use Blogger myself but found it arcane compared to WordPress. You should use WordPress – it is SO much better, easier and user friendly. Blogger is far too difficult – a relative dinosaur compared to WordPress. Just my 2c.

  27. Nigel Yip

    Hi Gary,

Thank you for your lengthy reply. Very useful – I’ve copied and saved it along with your other helpful replies for future reference and reminder for myself.

Your point about us males being single minded is very true and certainly put a smile and grin on my face – lol. I use to think I could multi-task, but looking back, all I was doing was kidding myself, wasting more time and what was a simple task if focused would take 5 min, it ended up being 1, possibly 2 hours as like your mentioning of the distraction causing interference.

Anyway, I look forward to your new advice, guides, reports etc…. I’m sure they will be most beneficial to us all, and yes I guess information overload was probably a factor which I never accounted for or overlooked completely.

I guess I’m also spreading myself too thinly across various business make-me-rich-schemes too which is dangerous and need to stop doing the “looking for the NEXT push-button-make-me-rich scheme”. Instead I just need to settle down, focus on one idea/blueprint and then, stick with it and make it work.

Looking forward to seeing what you and Linda have in store for the future

    Speak soon

  28. Theresa Mayhew

    Gary,
Just the act of agreeing to have an accountability partner has inspired me to step up my efforts so I have something to report. Kind of silly, but whatever works.

I also agree with Miss Minxy that you do need to choose carefully who you work with and that you’re in harmony with each other’s needs and expectations.

Lastly, it was a pleasure talking with this morning/evening and I owe you a debt of gratitude that is deeper than I can adequately express.

    Warmly,
    Theresa

    Gary,

I just love the way you write, you ROCK!

The call with Linda today was awesome, although need to go through it again to get more notes.

    Thanks for hooking me up.

Got some cool stuff lined up for the subscribers at my blog too, gunna be interviewing a guy i know called Martin who is making good money online on autopilot with Click Bank. Stay tuned for that.

  30. Gary

Hi Nigel – Thanks for the feed back. I appreciate it.

Linda is indeed involved in something significant here. I can feel it. The tremor… prelude to an earthquake. When the time is right there will be a major announcement here and I will turn the blog post over to her so that she can explain it to everybody properly.

    Gary

  31. Gary

Hi Theresa – I’m just glad to be able to help people. Lovely talking with you and Linda Caroll, Thom Swartwood, Garry Parkes, Dan Briffa and Renee Olsen on our little hook up last night.

Don’t be silly. You “owe” me nothing. But I appreciate your sentiments. That’s what it is all about – helping people and introducing others who have specialist knowledge.

    Gary

  32. Gary

Hi Dan – Thanks mate. Nice comment. I appreciate it. No probs about getting you in on that call with Linda Caroll last night. She has already forgotten more than what most of the so-called gurus even know LOL! (a favourite saying of mine… unfortunately)

What excites me about you young guys and girls in your late 20′s or early 30′s is the fact that you peeps are old enough to have credibility yet young enough to FLY with this Internet Marketing stuff.

The internet is the greatest leveller in the history of this planet. Single operators can now compete with even the biggest companies. And it can be done very quickly with the right motivation, passion and knowledge.

Let us all know when you interview this guy. Come and tell us and drop the link here Briffs.

    Gary

  33. Michael J Ottman

Sweet post Gary! I would like to touch on “accountability” since I blame you or should I say thank you for my latest project. You have been prodding me for a couple weeks now in different posts to get you a banner for my graphics ability and to be honest, I didn’t know what the banner would serve since I just had a blog and not a “real service.”

You stimulated me to “action” by praising me for my work and telling me over and over to get you a banner for your website. I decided to go ahead and start an ecover design site especially for those who don’t have a lot of money and just need some basic work for cover design.

I “planned” this out by deciding to use all of the free projects I’ve done recently as featured testimonials with links back to all of your sites. This gives me credibility and all of you exposure.

I don’t mean for this to be an ad but to let you know that it’s because of you that I finally decided to start the graphics business. Your tool of the action planner has helped greatly and your gentle nudging of getting you a banner ad makes you my “accountability partner.”

Read my latest post and you can copy and paste your banner directly from there. I really do appreciate it and you really don’t have to display one. Your feedback is of the greatest worth to me.

    Thanks buddy,

    Michael J Ottman

  34. Gary

@ Michael – Hmm, you or I must be psychic. I have just visited your blog and given you a tweet on Twitter – at the same time you were here posting your comment. Weird huh? I have already put your “advert” into the side panel.

    Gary

  35. Michael J Ottman

Well, the force of the Temple must be way strong in order to reach across the world to the US. Thanks for putting the banner on here, much apprecitaed.

BTW. I left my comment at 2:30 or so in the morning for me cause I do a lot of work on the weekends. I guess now I know when I can catch you live.

Hopefully, I’ll be ready with the site soon. I’m hoping all goes well and whatever happens happens. It will be a great fail forward fast thing for me.

Well, I’m off to design more stuff so I’ll go ahead and state now that it must be you who is psychic as you are the one who motivated me to do this in the first place.

    Michael J Ottman

  36. Linda

    Hey Michael…. I visited http://simpleecovers.com …. nice work!
How much will you be charging for basic ecovers?
(Hope you don’t mind me asking)
And when are you going live?

  37. Gary

@ Michael – Well, I was the one hassling you for the banner. I really like it too. It adds a nice splash of colour. I had a bit of a smile when I looked at the covers… in one way or another, I have had a little bit to do with all of those projects. I’m very proud of each of the authors for taking action and creating something that will benefit other people.

Like Linda Caroll, I’m interested in what your fees will be. If you want I can add some text under the image with the cost.

One thing that is starting to concern me a bit is this whole “FREE” thing that everybody is now so into. You may remember that I spoke about a “phenomenon” that I call “the Free Banana Monkey syndrome” in a previous issue of Garry Parkes’ “Profit Pulling Project” newsletter.

I think it is wonderful that people who are “networked” can do freebie things for each other, coz what goes around certainly comes around. But for UNnetworked people to expect us all to work for free is a bit concerning.

There are expenses involved in running websites and everybody’s time is at a premium these days. I think I might make this a topic for a post soon. I have been thinking about it for a while now and this topic is starting to “knock on a door” inside my head to get out.

  38. Ken Douglas

    Gary,

At one point in time I thought there was an advantage to commenting early to a post ( I know that some will argue that everyone who posts later will see the early comments). However, being true to the accusations that I follow a different drum, I am rapidly enjoying the advantage of commenting later as I am doinfg here because of the wisdom I am able to absorb as I review those earlier comments. I am convinced of this even more so with the recent understanding I have gained relative to the differences in “commerce” and “content” sites and the realization that I am most suited for the commerce sites.

Regarding your comments on the importance of planning, action and accountability, I agree completely. I would also add that one must maintain a certain degree of flexability along side these three business tenets. I subscribe to the theory that the best business plans are those which are written in pencil. In other words they can be easily changed if needed. The present economic conditions are certainly evidence of the need for adaptability.

Being adaptable also relates to accountability. As we become accountable for our plans and actions to others we must recognize when it becomes necessary to modify them. Alex taught us it is not so important what we do as it is important that we do something and then be willing to change as we “fail foward”. The phrase “ready, fire , aim” is also illustrative of this. As we are faced with obstacles we must learn to change and refine our direction if we are to progress.

Each of the students who completed Alex’s coaching program will apply the information we learned in a different manner. However, if we follow the guidelines of planning, acting and being accountable we each will find success as we have defined it for ourselves.

    Ken

  39. Gary

@ Ken – Howdy mate. Actually, my observation is that MOST people just quickly read the post at the top (if at all), scan to see who else has made comments, maybe scan a few people that they are interested in then just slam down some comments. The worst offenders just spill their guts about something totally irrelevant like “BUY THIS NOW!”

I’m pleased to say that this generally doesn’t happen here. Most commenters here read pretty carefully. Anyway, I know who does and who doesn’t – it’s blatantly obvious to me. So, first, middle or last… it probably doesn’t make a lot of difference to lurkers, only to the other commenters.

Yep, I agree that plans need to be flexible. All sorts of external influences and stimuli can require us to alter our plans as we go.

The most important thing that we need to do is commit ourselves to some form of ACTION. Like, you can plan forever but if you don’t actually DO anything then all the planning in the world will get you nowhere.

“go and check out my new Twitter page”

Been there, done that, got confused, got over it…!!

Honestly, there are times I think I just should just stay in bed…!!

  42. Garry Parkes

    Hi Gary,

    As usual another great post.

I’m managing to read this at the close of the weekend before I pop off to bed. Don’t get much chance to read stuff over the weekend but glad I read this!

Your idea of an accountability partner is an excellent one. I think a lot of people will benefit from taking this path, but to make it really work I feel both parties would have to be pretty much “equals”. “Equals” in terms of desire, commitment and focus.

Oh, just checked out your Twitter changes you mentioned Gazza. The bottom of the Twitter Page seems to not be showing on my size display. Also I think I prefer your prior Twitter picture icon. I’ll have to sleep on it. Maybe it’s just I’m so used to the old one :-)

  43. Gary

@ Nikki – Ha, ha! I bet you looked at it and went, “WTF? Who’s this?” Oh hang on. No. Sorry. A lady like you would have thought, “Oh dear. Who’s this?” LOL! Pretty radical changes huh?

I messed around with that, on and off, all Sunday. I’m hopeless like that. I get 95% done in record time and then I start stuffing around changing things and “tweaking” bits and pieces. Then I get annoyed and frustrated.

Regarding your last comment – depends with whom. PMSL

@ Garry – Parkesy! Where were you yesterday when I wanted you? Man I was baiting you big time over at Twitter. We had JT, Mark McWilliams, Briffs, Braysie and a few others – who seem to have latched on to TGM – on.

Oh… the post. Yeah. I was getting carried away with the whole Twitter thing. The post. I was thinking about the “accountability” idea and Theresa Mayhew mentioned the exact same idea so I thought right, it’s happening. I’m gonna write about it.

Back to Twitter… yeah, I knew that some screens might not display the text I put on there. You must have a little one (PMSL think that the PMW will eventually read that) – screen, that is. Of course!

It’s funny you know. We get used to seeing something and then when it changes we get all uncomfortable about it. I’m the same. When I first saw your new gravatar (100 times better than that stupid “eye of London” thing you had previously BTW) it took me a while to get used to it. After a few days it just became normal. So, Parkesy, get used to it! LOL.

    Gary

PS: Parkesy, I’m all over this Twitter thing now – like the ebola virus.

  44. Nikki

PMSL @ Parkesy having a little one. Hmm. Not what I saw over at the Lair, but then I’m good at eliciting that sort of response.

Oh, just replied to you over at Parkesy’s as well…

“Gomez: How long has it been since we waltzed?
    Morticia: Oh, Gomez…hours.”

    Nix

  45. Gary

Nix – Jeez you are quick!

Reminds me of a limerick – “the vicar was quicker and slicker and thicker and…” well, I can’t say any more for the purposes of “common decency.”

I shall shoot over to Parkesy’s to see “Tish.”

    Gary

  46. Nikki

    Gazza,

    Small one my ar*e !!!

My screen is 1440 * 900 which is a bigger resolution than the most. If I can’t see the bottom of the Twitter page most others won’t Gary so you probably do need to adjust things a little so the majority can see the text.

In fact, most I reckon won’t even realise that something is missing. The only reason I do is that a can see the top few pixels of the 6th line of text in the lower left of your Twitter Image.

You definitely need to move it up (I was going to say something else but I know Nix would jump all over me !)

    Garry

  49. Nigel Yip

    Hey Gary

Just dropped by this morning and noticed your mentioning of your new twitter page. I’m not sure what Garry is mentioning about as I can see the whole image of you in your martial art gear, albeit the image is a bit posterize. I’m running at 1680 *1050 resolution.

Still, like the new look and I Hope you are well

For anyone interested, these are the top browser sizes as of Feb/2009 listed at theCounter.com

    1600×1200: 387,025 (0%)
    640×480 : 105,615 (0%)

Gotta love that “unknown” in third place, hey?
Incidentally, I use 1280×1024 and see the whole image. : )

  53. Gary

Oh, I see I am now finally wearing my “new head” on my blog. Hmm, it took day or so to change. A slightly more “pensive” me.

@ Nix – I knew you wouldn’t be able to resist that. You are such a treasure. Hmm, maybe we will go down the Gomez and Morticia route now (I was gonna say something about spelling back there too, no doubt you will understand that – LOL!) “Querida!” Just don’t speak French. And if you do, throw me your arm.

Well, I was gonna fix that little spello but then your 2nd comment wouldn’t make sense and we can’t have that, hey?

@ Parkesy – Come in spinner! LOL! Very funny reply by the way. Having listened to your voice so many times I can just imagine your “British indignation” there. Sorry, but often the stupidest things amuse me.

Indeed, we need to be careful about the words we use when the PMW is prowling. Basically, over at the Lair (love that term BTW), we can go to town, so to speak. PMSL. Incidentally, I asked the Nixster this the other day… why is PMSL not just PML – as in “myself” being just ONE word?

Garry, that plain old twitter page was boring me so I decided to chuck something up there quick. I haven’t really bothered to do all that much but even so – on and off – it still took me quite a few hours on Sunday to do all the re-sizing, posterizing of the pic etc. Thanks for your comments, I’ll get around to it when I don’t have more important things in front of it (like about 100 of them!)

@ Nigel – Well done! You are the first to recognize the “posterization” of the pic. Then again, you are a photographic and video buff, so I would expect that. For others, posterization is the deliberate smudging of the picture to distort it a little.

@ Tommy - Very funny. NOT! Keep running. Um, I just mentioned the “blurry” bit above. It’s deliberate Tommy. I think it just gives the pic a more ethereal quality. And no, I am not explaining that word. Look it up in the lexicon if you don’t know it and learn a new word today. Words are fun. Well, I think they are anyway.

@ Nix – that is what is called s***h****g. These are the letters to fit into the “*” asterisks – n i c k o l u. Oh, don’t you just LOVE the way I did that? Now I am really amusing myself. Like I said somewhere above, let’s play Scrabble. I have a very interesting version. (I never lose BTW) PMSL. I better stop now.

@ Linda – now I’ll give you three guesses who will wanna make a comment about that screen size comment of yours. It just seems that anything to do with size elicits a comment. Actually, make that two guesses. In fact, you’re only gonna need one. ;-)

Thanks for the comment about seeing the whole image.

Sorry about the frivolous nature of most of those comments. It’s just one of those days inside TGM’s head.

    *checks pulse*

It would seem the only time that I am not in the mood for deviance will be once I’m dead. Trust me, I can find humour and naughtiness in pretty much every situation, which is usually thoroughly inappropriate so there are times I do have to keep it to myself. Sitting on my hands of course.

Right, I’m off to make some tea.

  59. Gary

@ Nigel – Great to hear you have had a productive week. So have I. A few sales, some opt-ins. It’s all good.
