Are You Persistent Enough?
by Gary ~ June 22nd, 2010
Hi folks,
I just thought I would say a couple of things in the hope that what I offer here can be assimilated into your thinking. And if you get my IDEA then I’m hoping that it will free up some of your “mind-space” for creativity rather than blanketing it with a useless negative emotion.
NEGATIVE EMOTIONS:
Negative emotions stifle creativity. When your mind is open or “free to roam” it can create marvelous things. We are ALL capable of this. But… some of us are locking down that creativity. And one of the worst things for that is frustration.
Frustration is your enemy. It will cloud your thinking.
I see a lot of frustration in many people from time to time. It’s very easy to see when people speak about it openly but, if you can “read between the lines,” it’s there in so many comments. It’s in the language. It’s in what is said and even sometimes in what is not said or even counter said or contra said.
Even worse than frustration is the negative emotion we know as anger. Anger will completely destroy your creativity.
WHAT CAUSES THIS?
Frustration occurs mainly because you are comparing YOUR personal “struggle” with the apparent ease that others are having. But what you see is only YOUR struggle. You don’t see and therefore don’t KNOW what goes on behind-the-scenes with other people. Consider this: You may be comparing your greatest weakness with another person’s greatest strength. How silly is that?
Anger occurs when you believe that you are being treated unfairly.
AN EXAMPLE:
For instance, I can’t speak German. To compare myself with ANY German-speaking person will leave me feeling inadequate. But do I want to speak German? No. I am also completely USELESS at golf. If I suddenly developed a burning desire for playing that game (which I won’t – just not interested in it) would it be fair for me to compare myself with Tiger Woods? Uh-uh. And yet, that is what I feel so many people are doing.
We all get frustrated at times. I get frustrated sometimes too. But I slap myself out of it real quick before it gets me down.
AN ANALOGY FOR YOU TO CONSIDER:
Let me share with you this analogy that I have used so many times in my dealings with other people on this matter. In fact, it’s part of my “Journey, Life, Destiny” Personal Development HOME STUDY Course. (See banner below)
Think of YOUR journey (in your chosen venture) as a being given a pack of cards. There are 52 cards (and a couple of jokers) in the deck. You are looking for the Aces. An ace signifies success (in whatever you are trying to achieve).
Every deck is shuffled differently because we are ALL different – different strengths and different weaknesses.
GOING THROUGH YOUR DECK:
So, you start turning over the cards in your deck, one-by-one. Your first five cards are 2, 7, 3, 9 and 4. No aces. Now, at this point, some people will throw up their hands and immediately say “Give me another deck.” These are the impatient ones. (Are you like that?)
Little did you know that the very next card you turned over could have been an ace. The chance of turning up one of those 4 aces is getting better with every card turned. But you became impatient and frustrated. So, you start again. You start turning the cards in a new deck… 5, 5, 6, 10 and 3. Aaagh! Time to tear the hair out! “GIVE ME ANOTHER DECK!”
Then you look across at another player and the very FIRST card that person turns over is… an ACE! Aaaaaaaaagh!
DAMN! What is wrong with YOUR deck?
Well, the answer is nothing. You just haven’t tried long enough or hard enough.
Then somebody else in the same field of activity turns up an ace on their 15th card. DOUBLE DAMN! Frustration and negative emotion sets in and you get down on yourself.
You demand another deck! And your very first card is… a joker. Jokers are those people in life who seem to exist only to upset, rip us off, ridicule and/or annoy us. We all have to deal with them. They are part of life. It’s how you respond to them that determines how badly they will affect you.
You grab the rest of the deck and throw it all over the floor in anger. Then you brood about how UNFAIR everything is…
Have you ever felt that way? I have. But let’s think about it.
WHAT HAPPENED?
What did the other players do that you didn’t? The obvious answer is that they persisted. Have you given yourself long enough to succeed? Are you comparing your strengths and weaknesses unfairly with the strengths and weaknesses of others? In other words, could you be comparing one of your weaknesses with one of the greatest strengths of another person? If you are doing that then you are ALWAYS going to be disappointed.
WHAT ARE YOUR CHOICES?
Basically, you have three choices:
1 – Keep chopping and changing decks before you give your deck a decent opportunity to produce,
2 – Just stop trying and get out of the game completely. Maybe try another game. Or…
3 – Keep turning over the cards thereby improving your chances card-by-card.
So, what are YOU going to do?
Well, if you are persistent enough you will keep turning those cards over. The odds are that you SHOULD turn over an ace in every 13 cards but if you don’t then you should know that the more cards you turn over without finding that elusive ace the better your chances will become.
Be persistent enough to give yourself the opportunity of winning.
HAS THIS HELPED YOU?
I hope this short analogy has helped you. I use it often. It’s an original idea that I had many years ago and I’ve never seen anybody else view things in this manner. Has it helped you? I hope so.

Hi Gazz,
Frustration gets the best of us, I don’t think a week goes by where I am not frustrated in my own business, usually aimed squarely at myself.
The difference to where I was a few years back is that instead of, using your card analogy, “keep chopping and changing decks before you give your deck a decent opportunity to produce”, I will just keep plugging on.
I made a nice little breakthrough in terms of SERPs today which simply would not have happened if I threw in the towel and not given it time to progress.

Hey Gazz,
Really good analogy. I know I have definitely felt like tossing the deck and just finding a new one. But you’re completely right that the best way forward is to keep going. In fact, I’ve found that to be exactly true in my life. When I keeping pushing through with one deck I either get results I want. Or I go through the whole deck and then when I don’t find the Ace I still have a great learning experience. But when I quit early I lost out on results and the learning experience.
Thanks for posting this.
Peace,

Hi Gazz,
Really enjoyed your post and the analogy was spot on mate!
So many times I have experienced exactly what you were alluding to, especially frustration and seemingly lack of progress compared to others.
Quite often my frustration has nothing to do with my rate of growth an development but everything to do faulty internet connections or power failures or whatever else my small Thai village can throw at me. It’s at times like this when my frustrations make me feel that it must be so much easier for others who have more reliable systems or that being so isolated I don’t get the opportunity to participate with other members of our MWA3.0 group.
But when this happens I also realize just how lucky I am to have the lifestyle I lead…and with a good self kick in the butt I move on. I do know that I am determined to success despite these setbacks so when i get my little wins, I reward myself.
I always believe that, using your card analogy, some of my “aces” have already arrived and I just have to recognize them and take action!
by the way Gazz, i tried to download your ad-swaps book 3 times without success…it’s probably my system again.

Hi Gazz
Great analogy – never heard that one before. The one I use is travelling down a road which may lead you to somewhere but you are likely to take quite a few wrong turnings along the way. You keep on plugging away and eventually you should find the right route as long as you are persistent enough and dont give up.
In IM terms many people chase shiny new objects whilst losing focus of the fundamental things they need to do, fail then buy something else and so on.

What’s up GazzMann!!
Hope all is well with you and the TEMPLE
Gotta say my friend that, once again, you’ve painted the picture perfectly and what a brilliant analogy to do it with!!
Persistence is the key…(well, as long as the route you’re following is one that is proven to work)…so just push on through the difficult days and remember why you’re doing what your doing. (I like to keep a picture by the computer to remind me of what I’m trying to achieve and who I’m doing it for…certainly helps me!!)

This post lifted the fog in my head and cleared away the doubts I’ve had lately about starting an Internet marketing business.
I’m still a bit new to this and felt a little lost for a minute but I know I’m on the right track when I read posts like this.
I blogged this post to spread the wisdom so to speak.
Thank you for your wisdom.

Hey TGM,
Thought I’d mosey on over to see what’s happening. I’ve just returned from a very relaxing holiday in Tenerife, where a very good time was had by all.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that I like your deck of cards analogy (possibly because I was playing cards on holiday) – you’re right, it’s very easy to start turning them over, looking for that elusive ace, and then getting frustrated when they don’t appear straight away.
The real lesson for me is to remember that the aces ARE in there – yes, it may take going through most of the deck before I find them, but they are there. Of course some will find them sooner than others, that’s just how the world rolls. It’d be far too boring if we were all the same.

@ David – There’s a lot to be said for persistence. Unfortunately, most people give up far too easily.
@ Darren – Glad you like the analogy. How’s that interview with the A-bomb survivor going?
@ Peter B – I feel for you mate. Often it’s hard enough to get things done WITHOUT system and technical problems. If I get time (LOL – rolls eyes) I’ll send you the Adswap book.
@ Peter D – Another good analogy (re roads and wrong turn choices). I often use my card analogy. People seem to understand it very easily.
@ Rob (RJB) – Glad you liked the analogy too. Good idea on the picture on the computer.
@ Jules – Glad I could help you focus a bit better. I’m always happy when something I say or write helps somebody else. Thanks for spreading the word.
@ Nix – Glad you had a nice holiday. Looks like that travel bug has got you, huh? Playing cards? I hope it wasn’t strip poker…
Thanks for those great comments folks.

TGM,
When a group of girls suggest a holiday for a bargain, it’d be rude to say no! We had a fabulous time. I’m thinking of making it an annual event.
Anyway, as for the card games, no, we weren’t playing strip poker, sorry about that. I do have some rather interesting tan lines though!!

PS – I see you’ve altered my comment above to include reference to your new product – I thought the sales page was absolutely excellent (as if I’d expect anything less!).

Nix – Tan lines? Your fair English skin actually saw the sun? Glad you had a good time. Yes, I have been tinkering with the page bit by bit for most of the day – mainly adding that banner (which I cropped and sized from the header) and the links. I’m not 100% happy with the sales page but I decided to hook it all up and fix it as I go. As you know, one of my flaws is that I just love everything to be perfect.
TGM – oh, oh… look below. LOL!

TGM,
Yes, my very pale gothic skin saw the light of day!! Shocking. I do actually have a bit of a tan as well as some interesting tan lines – I was slapping on the factor 30 sun lotion like it was going out of fashion though.
Good times all round!

Hi Gary,
That post was helpful, a good reminder. I think that getting frustrated is normal and that it happens to everybody who is aiming for something and misses.
Instead of giving up it helps to keep on going.
I think that the most poisonous thing one can do to oneself is to start comparing their success to other people who are doing way better.
I read somewhere that comparison with others when used as far as abilities are concerned and really in any other way (other than deciding what to buy to eat or which movie to see or which computer to get – Mac or PC? ) is violence directed at one’s own self.
And what good can come out of violating yourself?
Your stack of cards is a good analogy. The cards we’re dealt are neutral and it is the way we play them that is all important.

Hey Gazzman
Whew, what can I say that’s not already been said by others, a really great analogy.
I think it’s a given now to most MWA students that when we reach that place where no one likes to be, there’s a “Go To” place we can visit which is sure to help us regain our true perspective – thanks Gary.
BTW
My tan lines are arriving in a few weeks time – but they won’t be as interesting as Nikki’s – LOL
