Hi Gary,

You're right: most people in business have little idea of the importance of marketing. They also confuse marketing with selling... most think they mean the same thing. Uh-uh. Wrong.

Here's a useful analogy I use in my offline marketing workshops that illustrates the difference: duck shooting!

The marketer knows when the duck season is, where the ducks are and how many they can take. They know what decoys, quackers and other tools work and what don't. They know how to get ducks in the air if they're not attracted by the decoys, etc. They load the gun, take aim and pull the trigger.

Then they send the sellers to bring back the wounded ducks.

Marketing is about identifying a need and satisfying it.

Whoop-de-doo! NO emotion involved. That's why marketers are back-room generals who analyze, test and evaluate endlessly.

The role of the seller is to get people to WANT what they NEED. (Because what you don't need can never satisfy you.)

The world needs both marketers and sellers. Selling without marketing is the most frustrating, unfulfilling activity on earth. But marketing without selling is the most pointless activity. Nothing happens until someone makes the sale. It's the world's oldest profession, after all. (Even older than that other one: someone first had to make the sale!)

It doesn't matter how much someone NEEDS what you're offering, until they WANT it, they won't BUY it!

Nifty blog, mate. Good to see. :D

Hi Gary,

The art of selling is indeed an art and copywriting is selling in print and if it can be learned well it'll certainly pay.

I don't know much about copywriting except that it's not copying. But I think I read or heard it somewhere that it has evolved almost into a science.

They do all this testing which words work best and the types of fonts and their colors.

Do you go into that too in your book?

Anyway I'll check it out.

Thanks for offering the fruits of your hard labor. I know you like writing and helping which is why people are drawn to you.

Hi James... "Mighty GazzMan" - dearie me! LOL!

Well, I gotta say this, don't I? (That was really good English!) Yes, you will learn a LOT from my copywriting book. It outlines all the basics for you and you will be a LOT more competent at this skill if you study and learn what I have written in it.

Hey Mighty Gazzman,

I have to say sometimes, I can't even spell the words let alone put them together to make them look good.

I will certainly be taking a look at your book and taking action on it as it is in my goals of things to learn. Since I know that it is coming from you then it's got to be good :-)

Speak soon,

Ha Iain!

OMG!

"I look forward to meeting you in Vegas – and meeting the man behind the legend who’s always got something compelling to say that stacks up and makes sense."

You are too kind. Legend. LOL! I usually have a crude comment to make about "leg-ends" but I shall refrain - just this once.

Thanks mate. I look forward to meeting you too.

Hey Gary,

Another great post! It really is all about marketing your products - and you do that with words. Whether through written words or through spoken words - it's all about gaining and keeping the attention of people so that they take action.

I look forward to meeting you in Vegas - and meeting the man behind the legend who's always got something compelling to say that stacks up and makes sense.

@ Peter - we all have many weaknesses. I know I do. I would LOVE to know some of the stuff that other people can do - especialy that bugger Parkesy below (LOL). But... while we learn we should be playing to our strengths. We all have those too. Glad I could point the way with some copywriting material for you.

Gee. Wish you hadn't mentioned the spin-doctoring of the Labour movement. They can make a dog turd sound like they are serving up a truffle to you. But as far as I'm concerned, if it looks like dog sh*t and it smells like dog sh*t then don't expect me to taste it coz in my book two out of three is enough. We get the same mushroom treatment over here with our left-wing Labor (note slight change in spelling for Oz) loonies over here.

@ Walter - thanks for the comment mate. Pleased to help.

@ Parkesy - How are you Gazza? Same to you buddy. I'm now almost set for vegas. I had some BIG challenges standing in front of me but like everything else I find my way around them or over them or under them or... straight through them (my preferred option when dealing with the class of people that I have spoken to you about privately).

Thanks for commenting Pete, Walt and Gazza.

Hi Gary,

Well firstly congratulations on breaking 100k on Alexa.

Of all the people from the coaching course we did a year ago you certainly deserve it the amount of time (and writing!) you have put into your Blog ... sorry TEMPLE!

Appreciate your comments and sentiments you expressed over at my blog. I Agree, lol … seriously though … I’m proud to have to as a friend Gary and looking forward to having a great time when we get together in Vegas in January.

In the meantime hope you and your family have a great Christmas.

All the best,
Garry

I have been ignorant about the nature of copywriting. Now you have given me an idea about it. :-)
